DSP Issue 6 // Taking Breaks
Micro-fiction, poetry, and musings from among the stars.
I’ve been struggling with staying motivated working on The Mara Files. Currently, I’m editing the new version of Book 2.
With great reluctance, I took a short break and found it was just what I needed.
Creating quality pieces of media takes time, effort and much brainpower, so it makes sense to put these things on hold when needed.
Unfortunately, my brain has been indoctrinated with needing to be productive all the time, so it’s hard to admit it’s okay to rest and focus on other things.
What I'm Writing
As I’ve been taking a break working on the Mara Files, I’ve been dabbling in short, fun writing projects. A little fanfiction, and some short stories.
The latter of which should come your way soon!
What I'm Revising
I’ve been editing some old flash fiction pieces to publish here, so stay tuned for those.
What I'm Reading
I’m listening to A Universe Of Wishes - A We Need Diverse Books anthology. Do you enjoy short-story collections? I do!
It gives me a great sample of authors, styles and concepts.
In the past month, some of the best books I’ve read include A Psalm For The Wild-Built by Becky Chambers, Skyward by Brandon Sanderson, and Black Light Express by Philip Reeve.
What I'm Eyeing
Next on my list are some books by Yoon Ha Lee, We Could by Heroes by Mike Chen, and an Afrofuturistic book called War Girls.
6 Words Story
The starlight steals life from her.
50 Words Microfiction
So this is how the world ends, right? All smoke and flame, fire and ash. It's beautiful but terrifying but inevitable, all these contradicting terms wrapped up in our ultimate, untimely end.
What if this event wasn't the end of everything? What if I said there was a way out?
Stars wait forever
Then it goes supernova
To be born anew
It was a simple mission
There and back to collect some samples
Nothing dangerous, they said
You'll be fine, they said
Oh, how wrong they were
It began with a simple trip to the galley
I was hungry, but it was late at night
And that's when it happened
The feeling something wasn't right
But I couldn't place it at first, I felt uneasy
That was it
One trip to the galley and I knew
This is where it all went wrong
If you enjoyed this month's transmission, why not fuel my creative addiction by buying me juice? See you in the stars.
